Old Jobs and Industries in Seixal and its Suburbs

 The territory presently occupied by Seixal, was occupied, during a long time (many and many countries), by different and laborious people. Although the small geographical area, it has a very rich and diverse cultural, industrial, archaeological and human heritage.

The bay, with the same name of the town (Seixal), was the starting point of the settlement and development of the region, so much due to the sea, as to the fields.

To simplify, this composition is divided into three points and the professions are designated in the male, for the same reason (simplicity).

1 – Connect to the sea/river – taking advantage of the afforded by the sea and the bay 

Activities: fishing, canning, (preservation and processing of fish), dried fish (especially cod), salt extraction, boat/ship repair, maritime transport (people and goods) and mills of tides (water mills) for grinding the cereals, for the production of feed flour.

Jobs: fisherman, carpenter, caulker, teacher, miller and salt man.

2 – Connect with the country and the field – explore the features of agriculture and livestock 

 

Agricultural Activities: growing or production of cereals, wine, olive oil, dairy products,             vegetables, growing flowers and other foodstuffs;

Jobs: farmer, cowboy, shepherd, florist and peasant.

 

3 – Other manufacturing 

Activities: extraction and processing of sand to make glass bottles and large bottles (demijohn), for wine and olive oil produced in the fields, extraction and processing of timber for building ships and houses, rocks and stones for the construction of buildings and dwellings, transformation of oils and fats, to make soap and soap scent, and many other industries, such as factory of wool, cotton and silk, leather, plastics, steel and pyrotechnical products;

Jobs: cork man, soap man, pyrotechnic, chemical, labourer, weaver, spinner and glassmaker.

Surely there will be other gentlemen and ladies, with more knowledge, or richer memory, who want to share their knowledge and their experiences.
